MTGP continues to assist individuals and communities long after it has left an area.
When MTGP first arrived in the Greenhills area of East Kilbride, many residents and police expressed concern regarding acts of gang retaliation following a gang related murder.
MTGP was approached by parents concerned that their children would get involved and wanted something to offer as an alternative to further violence.
CUPI identified that many attendees did not have food prior to attending at MTGP and did not have money to buy something from nearby shops. They then utilised MTGP’s lugger to operate the supply of free hot food to attendees.
MTGP remained in the area longer than normal to support the group and have returned during periods of concern, including the much publicised court case and subsequent counter charges by the accused. MTGP remain in regular contact and attend at the area to help quell disturbances etc, even when they are not operating in the area.

Community Capacity Building: CUPI
CUPI (Communities United Promoting Inclusion) was formed by parents and residents after MTGP targeted Greenhills following a gang-related murder.
Activities now include a youth group which regularly attracts approximately 175 attendees on a Friday night. They also formed a Youth Drama Group who have performed several thought provoking dramas and pantos including one about the real life experiences of attending at Moving the Goalposts.
CUPI also assist 2 teams to participate in the MTGP Community Leagues. They now have a base of 20 trained adult and youth volunteers who carry out a wide variety of activities and events on a weekly basis throughout a busy year.

CUPI held several community consultation events which identified that attendance at leisure centres was a major financial barrier for residents.
It was decided to try to develop a nearby area of waste ground and known drinking den into a community external fitness and wellbeing area.
With advice and support from MTGP and partners, the management group achieved full funding of £195,500 for the work required.
Construction included the erection of 2 MUGA pitches (including a pitch at another location in Greenhills), toddlers swing park, rock climbing area and an external fitness area. All facilities will be provided to the public free of charge.
An amazing achievement for the group following only 5 years of existence.

The development has totally transformed an area that was unused into an excellent free to use, community facility, run by a management group of residents and overseen by CUPI.
All the parents and residents involved with CUPI should be congratulated on what they have achieved. The level of volunteering and capacity building is outstanding.
