‘R2’ is 17 and resides in the Blantyre area of South Lanarkshire. R2 was 15 when he initially attended on his own when MTGP was carrying out its Community League activity in Blantyre.
Upon speaking to the coaches, R2 indicated that he did not have any interest in football but following discussions with the coaches agreed to attend at MTGP when it was in his area at the weekend.
He attended each evening and began to display a natural talent for playing football and quickly became keen to learn and develop his football skills and knowledge.
R2 became a member of one of the Blantyre area teams which participated weekly at the ‘Choose Life Community Leagues’. His team did well and finished within the top 6 in their league. This allowed them to participate in the Community League Play-offs.
R2 played extremely well in an outstanding hard fought match. He was voted player of the match by his fellow attendees and coaches. He was then presented with his first ever trophy.
Things started to develop very quickly for R2. Due to the persuasion of the MTGP coaches, he began to play for a local team increasing his football skills and fitness levels. He played so well that scouts from Glasgow Celtic attended at a match which resulted in him signing a full time 2 year professional contract with Glasgow Celtic.
Not bad for someone who didn’t play football until he attended at Moving the Goalposts
‘My involvement with Moving the Goalposts has changed my life so quickly.
I’m now a full time professional football player with arguably one of the biggest clubs in the world. I signed a two year deal and have to keep pinching myself.
If it wasn’t for this project and its coaches who encouraged me to be the best I could be I wouldn’t even be kicking a ball, never mind playing for Celtic.
I am very grateful for the opportunity I have been given by Moving the Goalposts. Everyone loves it.’ R2
