Greenhills: ‘B’ (18)

‘B’ has attended MTGP since he was 12 and never misses a night when MTGP is in his area.

He is also a regular attendee at the Community Leagues despite suffering from Dyspraxia which adversely affects his coordination. His long term participation with MTGP and at various outward bound activities organised by MTGP such as orienteering, skiing and canoeing have greatly enhanced his coordination and really improved his confidence. His family have observed significant improvement in his coordination and confidence as a direct result of his continued involvement with MTGP.

‘B’ was due to play a leading role in the MTGP Drama that the CUPI Youth Drama Group had designed and developed based on true incidents from attending MTGP with 2 performances planned at the East Kilbride Arts Centre on the 17th October 2014.

All the cast were attendees of MTGP who had worked for a full year learning how to act and develop the content of the play. All of the cast had not acted before.

The day before the performances, ‘B’ decided to pull out of the play. His mum who is also a regular attendee at MTGP and CUPI, contacted MTGP as she didn’t want her son to miss out after all his hard work.

A MTGP coach arranged to meet with ‘B’ that evening and spoke to him at length. ‘B’ disclosed that he was buying medication from the internet and was self-medicating. He was depressed and felt that everything was getting to him.

Following lengthy discussions, ‘B’ decided that he wanted to take part in the drama and with the support and assistance of MTGP and his mum, ‘B’ took part in all the performances. ‘B’ did so well that he was voted as the star performer in the sell out shows.

He approached the MTGP coach directly after the first performance to thank him for taking time to help him and for his good advice.

‘B’ and his mum later attended at his GP, he has stopped self-medicating and states that he gained a lot of confidence from his performances and plans to continue with his acting in the future.
