Westburn: K (18) and S (17)

‘K’ and ‘S’ are two girls from the Westburn area of Halfway, Cambuslang within South Lanarkshire. They attended one night when MTGP was in their area. K had just been charged by the police and was at a particularly low point.

After about 6 weeks of gaining their trust, ‘S’ informed MTGP that she used to go to a local boxing club but that it had folded several years ago. Following discussions with the coaches he stated that she wished to recommence boxing training as it was an activity along with being at MTGP that she enjoyed. ‘K’ had been looking for employment for a very long time but had been unable to get past the interview stage. She felt that no one was willing to give her a chance.

‘K’ and ‘S’ through MTGP’s partnership links were then able to join East Kilbride Community Trust’s Boxing Club located in East Kilbride. As the costs of transport were proving to be a major barrier, all transport and costs were provided by Centrespot Development (MTGP coaching supplier).

‘S’ has grown in confidence and is enjoying the benefits of regular exercise and is now displaying a more positive outlook to life and has stopped hanging around the streets drinking and fighting.

‘K’ has gone on to become a volunteer with MTGP on a Sunday night and never misses a night.

When ‘K’ and ‘S’ first met MTGP, both girls had just became homeless with ‘S’ being informed by her mum that she would have to leave the family home as she had not obtained either employment or a further education position and as a result was not bringing money into the home.

MTGP were able to alert partners who assisted both girls in formulating CV’s and action plans, which in turn, has resulted in both gaining full time employment.

‘K’ and ‘S’ are no longer homeless and are back living with their families.
